Mel the Sign Man
Mel Kostiuk will be giving a slideshow and talk about his wooden sign business, Mel the Sign Man.
Mel became interested in woodworking as a teenager, including carpentry and wood art. He apprenticed in carpentry and worked on both residential and commercial construction projects. He became involved in a friend’s business that focused on cedar log furniture, where small wooden signs and name plaques were also being carved. This led to his own family operated business, designing and manufacturing small furniture items. He continued carving small signs. Finding carved wood signs to be his most successful activity, he closed his business and went mobile, using a travel trailer and one-ton van to tour northwestern Canada, with great success producing massive highway signs for many northern communities. Mel has also produced custom oak carvings for the Banff Springs Hotel.
